The 1896 Morgan Dollar stands as a classic example of late nineteenth-century American coinage. Struck from 0.7734 troy ounces of 90 percent silver, this particular specimen has been graded Mint State 64 (MS-64), preserving its intricate design features in remarkable condition. Because this coin was struck at the main Philadelphia Mint, it bears no mint mark, a characteristic common to the facility's output during this era. On the obverse, the profile of Liberty is depicted wearing a traditional Phrygian cap. A band in her hair is inscribed with the word "LIBERTY". Encircling this central portrait is the Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM", along with thirteen stars representing the original colonies and the 1896 date of issue at the bottom. The reverse side presents a powerful bald eagle clutching both an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the face value, "ONE DOLLAR". The national motto, "In God We Trust", is positioned directly above the eagle's head. As a series, the Morgan Dollar served as active currency for roughly 80 years, making this well-preserved survivor a fascinating window into America's monetary past.
