In 1896, the San Francisco Mint struck this impressive twenty dollar gold piece, a denomination often referred to as a double eagle. Containing 0.9675 troy ounces of gold, this substantial coin represents a design era that spanned from 1850 to 1907. This specific specimen has survived in remarkable condition, certified by professional graders at Mint State 62. The obverse side presents a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a coronet decorated with pearls, which clearly displays the inscription LIBERTY. Surrounding her profile are thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the year 1896 positioned at the bottom rim. On the reverse, an eagle stretches its wings while holding a defensive shield across its chest. Above the eagle, a halo of rays illuminates an oval containing thirteen stars. The national motto IN GOD WE TRUST is positioned within this upper design, while the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS frame the central image. The small S mint mark below the eagle confirms its origin at the San Francisco facility.
