Struck in the late nineteenth century, this United States twenty dollar gold coin represents a classic era of American coinage. Issued by the San Francisco Mint in 1896, the piece is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of the precious metal. This specific design was produced by the United States Mint for more than half a century, spanning the years 1850 to 1907. The obverse side presents a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a delicate, pearl-bordered diadem that is clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Surrounding her profile is a ring of stars, with the year of issue, 1896, anchored at the bottom. On the reverse, a powerful eagle is depicted with its wings fully spread, bearing a protective shield upon its breast.
