Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this 1896 silver dollar represents a classic era of American coinage. The coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of silver, with a total purity of 0.900. As part of a series that circulated in the United States for about eighty years, this specific issue is a compelling survivor from the final years of the nineteenth century. The obverse presents a left-facing profile of Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap that bears the word "Liberty" along its band. Surrounding her portrait are thirteen stars, the 1896 year of issue, and the Latin motto "E Pluribus Unum." On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted clutching both an olive branch and arrows in its talons. The eagle is framed by the inscriptions "United States of America" and "One Dollar," alongside the motto "In God We Trust." Just below the wreath on this side, the "S" mint mark identifies its origin from the West Coast minting facility.
