This 1896 silver dollar represents a classic era of United States coinage, emerging from the San Francisco Mint as indicated by the S mint mark on the reverse. Struck with a silver purity of 90 percent, the coin contains 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. It survives today in a certified Very Fine 35 state of preservation, displaying the honest wear and character of a coin that likely saw active circulation in the late nineteenth century. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, who wears a Phrygian cap adorned with a band displaying her name. Surrounding this central figure are thirteen symbolic stars, the year 1896, and the traditional Latin motto meaning out of many, one. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted with outspread wings, grasping both an olive branch of peace and arrows of strength. Above the eagle, the national motto proclaims trust in God, while the outer inscriptions identify the issuing nation as the United States of America and designate the face value as one dollar.
