1897 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-62 PCGS

0.9675 troy oz .900 1897 PCGS

In 1897, the Philadelphia mint struck this impressive twenty-dollar gold coin, a denomination often referred to as the Double Eagle. Containing 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900, this piece represents a classic era of United States coinage. The design, which was produced by the U.S. Mint between 1850 and 1907, was originally created by James B. Longacre. The front of the coin features a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a crown-like diadem decorated with pearls, which is clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle her profile, representing the original colonies, with the date 1897 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, a powerful eagle spreads its wings, protecting a shield positioned on its chest. Above the eagle, a radiant halo of rays surrounds an oval of thirteen stars. The inscriptions on this side include the issuing nation, United States of America, and the face value, Twenty Dollars, alongside the motto IN GOD WE TRUST.
