In 1897, the Philadelphia mint produced this impressive twenty-dollar gold coin, a denomination often referred to as the Double Eagle. Containing 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900, this piece belongs to a long-running United States coin series that spanned from 1850 to 1907. This specific specimen has survived in remarkable condition, graded Mint State 63 (MS-63) and verified for its exceptional quality. The design, created by James B. Longacre, showcases a striking portrait of Liberty on the obverse. She is depicted facing left, wearing a coronet or diadem bordered with pearls, which is clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies encircle her profile, with the date 1897 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, a powerful eagle with spread wings holds a shield upon its chest. Above the eagle, an oval of thirteen stars is bathed in rays of light, accompanied by the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The outer edge of the design is inscribed with the country of origin, United States of America, and the face value, Twenty Dollars.
