1897 Morgan Dollar BU (VAM-6A, Pitted Rev, Top-100)

0.7734 troy oz .900 1897 Brilliant Unc

The 1897 Morgan Silver Dollar is a classic example of late nineteenth-century American coinage, struck in 0.900 fine silver and containing 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal. This particular Brilliant Uncirculated specimen belongs to the celebrated VAM-6A variety, highly regarded by specialists who study die variations. What makes this specific variety stand out is a prominent area of pitting visible on the reverse side, located directly beneath the tailfeathers of the central eagle. On the obverse, the coin displays a left-facing portrait of Liberty. The reverse depicts a bald eagle grasping an olive branch and a cluster of arrows in its talons. Surrounding the eagle are the inscriptions "United States of America," "One Dollar," and the motto "In God We Trust." Because this coin was struck at the Philadelphia mint, it does not bear a mint mark, leaving the space below the wreath open and clean.
