1897-O Morgan Dollar VG/VF
Struck in the late nineteenth century, this 1897 silver dollar represents a classic era of American coinage. Minted in New Orleans, as indicated by the O mint mark, this piece is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of the precious metal. It belongs to the famous Morgan series, which remains one of the most widely recognized designs in United States numismatic history. Out of a total mintage of 4,004,000 pieces for this year and mint, this specimen survives in a combined Very Good to Very Fine condition. The obverse of the coin displays a left-facing portrait of Liberty. She wears a traditional Phrygian cap, with a hair band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Surrounding her profile are thirteen stars, the year 1897, and the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. This side of the coin captures the artistic spirit of the late 1800s, blending classical symbolism with American ideals. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted with its wings spread, clutching both an olive branch and arrows in its talons. This central image is encircled by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the face value, ONE DOLLAR. The national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST, is positioned directly above the eagle, completing a design that reflects the national identity of the era.
