1897-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-64 PCGS

0.9675 troy oz .900 1897 PCGS

In 1897, the San Francisco Mint struck a significant run of 1,470,250 gold coins in the twenty-dollar denomination. Known as the Liberty Gold Double Eagle, each of these impressive pieces is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal. This particular specimen has survived in remarkable condition, certified by professional graders at Mint State 64. The obverse features the classic profile of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with the word LIBERTY, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1897 positioned below. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle holding a shield, flanked by ornate scrollwork. Above the eagle, a circle of stars surrounds the national motto, IN GOD WE TRUST. The reverse inscriptions also identify the issuing nation as the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and declare the denomination as TWENTY DOLLARS, with the small 'S' mint mark indicating its origin at the San Francisco facility.
