The 1897-S Morgan Silver Dollar stands as a remarkable survivor from the late nineteenth century, minted in San Francisco during an era when these heavy silver coins were a staple of daily commerce. Struck from 0.900 fine silver and containing 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal, this coin represents a design that circulated throughout the United States for nearly eighty years. On the obverse, a left-facing portrait of Liberty is depicted wearing a Phrygian cap, which is adorned with a band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. The border of the coin is encircled by the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars representing the original colonies, and the 1897 date of issue. The reverse displays a powerful bald eagle with its wings spread, clutching both an olive branch of peace and arrows of strength. Surrounding this central motif are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR, along with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Directly below the eagle, the S mint mark denotes its origin at the historic San Francisco Mint.
