1898 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle MS-62 PCGS

In 1898, the Philadelphia Mint produced a limited run of 170,395 gold double eagles, each containing 0.9675 troy ounces of pure gold. This particular specimen has survived in remarkable condition, certified by professional grading services at Mint State 62. It represents the final design evolution of a series that spanned more than half a century, from 1850 to 1907. The obverse side presents a left-facing profile of Liberty. Her hair is bound by a band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY, and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year 1898 is struck boldly at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, a majestic heraldic eagle guards a shield on its chest. Above the eagle, thirteen stars form a halo beneath the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. This motto distinguishes the design from earlier versions of the series, as it was only added to the reverse starting in 1866. Encircling the eagle are the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the full denomination, spelled out as TWENTY DOLLARS.
