In 1898, the United States Mint produced this impressive twenty-dollar gold piece, a denomination often referred to as the Double Eagle. Struck from 0.900 fine gold, the coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal. This particular specimen has survived in a remarkable state of preservation, certified by experts at a Mint State 63 grade, which highlights the crispness of its original design elements. The obverse of the coin presents a classic profile of Lady Liberty, her hair secured with a coronet, encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. On the reverse, an eagle spreads its wings wide, protecting a shield on its breast. Above the eagle, thirteen stars are arranged in an oval format surrounded by rays of light. The reverse also bears the prominent inscriptions "United States of America" and "Twenty Dollars," along with the motto "In God We Trust." This iconic design was created by James B. Longacre and served as a staple of American commerce for over half a century, with production spanning from 1850 to 1907. While these coins were minted at various facilities over the years, including Denver, Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco, this specific 1898 issue originates from the main minting facility in Philadelphia.
