Struck in the final years of the nineteenth century, this twenty dollar gold piece represents a classic era of United States coinage. Produced at the San Francisco Mint, the coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. This specific issue has been certified in Mint State 64 condition, indicating a high level of preservation that allows its original design elements to remain exceptionally clear. The obverse features a left facing portrait of Liberty, her hair secured while wearing a diadem bordered with pearls that displays the inscription LIBERTY. Surrounding her portrait are thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1898 positioned at the bottom. This design, created by James B. Longacre, served as a staple of American gold currency from 1850 to 1907. On the reverse, a majestic eagle with spread wings holds a shield upon its breast. Above the eagle, thirteen stars are arranged in an oval pattern beneath a halo of rays. The reverse is completed by the inscriptions United States of America and the denomination Twenty Dollars, framing the central heraldic image.
