In 1899, the Philadelphia facility of the United States Mint produced this impressive twenty-dollar gold piece. Containing 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900, this substantial coin belongs to a celebrated era of American coinage that spanned from 1850 to 1907. This specific specimen has survived in remarkable condition, earning a certified grade of Mint State 63 (MS-63). The design, created by James B. Longacre, presents a classic representation of Lady Liberty on the obverse, where she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. On the reverse, Longacre depicted a heraldic eagle with its wings fully spread, bearing a protective shield upon its breast. Above the eagle, a radiant oval contains another grouping of thirteen stars. The reverse also bears the bold inscriptions indicating the nation of origin, United States of America, and the face value of Twenty Dollars.
