In 1899, the Philadelphia Mint produced 1,669,300 of the twenty-dollar gold coins known as the Liberty Double Eagle. Struck without a mint mark, this specific piece has survived the decades in remarkable condition, achieving a certified grade of Mint State 64 (MS-64). Within the grading population, only 1,932 examples have been recorded at this precise level of preservation, while a mere 350 specimens have been graded any higher, making it a fascinating survivor of late nineteenth-century American coinage. Crafted from 0.900 fine gold with a gold content of 0.9675 troy ounces, the coin showcases the iconic design elements of its era. The obverse features the profile of Liberty, adorned with a coronet inscribed with her name, surrounded by thirteen stars and the date 1899. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows, shielded and flanked by ornate scrolls. Above the eagle, the religious motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is encircled by stars, while the surrounding inscriptions declare "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and the denomination "TWENTY DOLLARS."
