1899 $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle MS-62 PCGS
In 1899, the Philadelphia Mint produced over 1.7 million gold half eagles, each carrying a face value of five dollars. This particular specimen survived the decades in exceptional condition, earning a certified grade of Mint State 62 (MS-62). Struck from 90 percent pure gold, the coin contains 0.2419 troy ounces of precious metal, representing a classic era of American coinage before the gold recalls of the 1930s. The obverse features the iconic profile of Liberty, her hair styled upwards and secured by a coronet inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle her image, representing the original colonies, with the year 1899 anchored at the bottom. Because it was struck at the main Philadelphia facility, the coin bears no mint mark, leaving the space below the reverse eagle clean. On the reverse, a proud heraldic eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows in its talons, shielded by a patriotic crest. The inscriptions declare the nation of origin, the United States of America, alongside the five-dollar denomination. This well-preserved survivor offers a direct window into late nineteenth-century minting artistry.
