The 1899 Indian Head Cent represents a classic era of United States minor coinage. Struck in a durable copper alloy consisting of 95 percent copper with the remaining 5 percent composed of tin and zinc, this penny displays the enduring artistry of the late nineteenth century. This particular specimen survives in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the crisp details of its original minting over a century ago. The obverse of the coin features a stylized depiction of Liberty adorned in a traditional Native American feather headdress. Across the band of the headdress, the word LIBERTY is clearly visible, while the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arches around the portrait, anchored by the 1899 date at the bottom. This design, created by James B. Longacre, offers a fascinating look at how national symbols were interpreted during this period. On the reverse, the coin keeps its focus simple and direct. The words ONE CENT are boldly centered within a decorative wreath. Minted in Philadelphia, this coin carries no mint mark, which was standard for the main facility at the time.
