The 1899 Morgan silver dollar represents a fascinating moment in American coining history, notably because of its remarkably low mintage. Only 330,000 of these silver dollars were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, making the issue a compelling subject for study. Each coin is composed of 90 percent silver, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of the precious metal. On the obverse, a left-facing portrait of Liberty is adorned with a Phrygian cap, a traditional emblem of freedom. Her hair band is inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Encircling this central figure are thirteen stars, the year 1899, and the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse displays a powerful bald eagle with its wings spread, grasping a bundle of arrows and an olive branch. This central design is framed by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR, while the motto In God We Trust is positioned directly above the eagle.
