The 1899 Morgan silver dollar represents a fascinating moment in American coining, originating from a remarkably low mintage of just 330,000 pieces struck at the Philadelphia Mint. Because it lacks a mint mark, we know this coin was minted at the nation's primary facility. This particular specimen has survived the decades in an exceptional state of preservation, certified as Mint State 65 (MS-65), showcasing the exquisite details of the original engraving. Designed by George T. Morgan, the obverse of the coin presents a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty. Her hair is adorned with a Phrygian cap, which is decorated with sprigs of cotton and wheat. Encircling her portrait are thirteen stars, the date 1899, and the traditional Latin motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM". The word "LIBERTY" is also visible on her hairband. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted with its wings spread wide, grasping arrows and an olive branch in its talons to symbolize both strength and peace. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR" frame the eagle, while the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" is positioned directly above its head. This large silver coin measures 38.1 mm in diameter, has a thickness of 3.1 mm, and weighs 2.040 ounces, containing 0.7734 troy ounces of actual silver within its 0.900 fine composition.
