The 1900 Lafayette Dollar represents a landmark moment in United States numismatic history. As the very first classic commemorative silver dollar produced by the United States Mint, this coin also holds the distinction of being the first American issue to display the portrait of a U.S. president. Charles Barber designed this historic piece, which contains 0.7734 troy ounces of actual silver content with a fineness of 0.900. The obverse of the coin showcases the conjoined profile busts of George Washington and the French military officer General Lafayette. On the reverse, the design depicts the equestrian monument of Lafayette. This coin was originally released to raise money for the erection of that very statue, which was placed in Paris near the famous Louvre museum. This particular specimen is preserved in an exceptional state of preservation, certified as Mint State 62 (MS-62).
