1900-S Morgan Dollar MS-62 NGC

0.7734 troy oz .900 1900 MS-62 (NGC)

The turn of the twentieth century brought forth this striking silver coin from the San Francisco Mint, an institution that would famously survive the devastating earthquake of 1906. Minted with a silver purity of 0.900 and containing 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal, this 1900-S dollar is a heavy piece of history measuring 38.1 millimeters in diameter and 3.1 millimeters in thickness. Its creation was authorized under the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, which mandated the government purchase and coin millions of dollars of silver monthly. George T. Morgan designed the iconic imagery on both sides of the coin. The obverse features a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty, who wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton. The Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM is inscribed along the rim, with the year 1900 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, a bald eagle spreads its wings while clutching arrows and an olive branch. The reverse inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, and ONE DOLLAR, with the 'S' mint mark indicating its San Francisco origin. This particular specimen has been certified in Mint State 62 (MS-62) condition. Out of a total mintage of 3,540,000 pieces, finding examples that preserve their original luster and design details provides an exciting glimpse into America's turn-of-the-century coinage.
