1901 $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle MS-62 PCGS
Struck at the Philadelphia Mint at the dawn of the twentieth century, this 1901 gold quarter eagle represents a classic era of American coinage. The denomination carries a face value of two and a half dollars and was minted using a composition of 90 percent gold, containing 0.12094 troy ounces of the precious metal. This particular specimen has survived in remarkable condition, certified by professional graders at Mint State 62. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair secured by a band clearly inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, representing the original colonies, with the date 1901 positioned below. This elegant depiction was created by Christian Gobrecht, and the design series enjoyed a long production run spanning from 1840 to 1907. On the reverse, a powerful heraldic eagle stands with a protective shield across its breast. The bird holds symbols of national strength and peace in its talons. Surrounding the central image are the legends indicating the issuing authority, United States of America, along with the denomination of the coin. Out of a total mintage of 91,100 pieces struck for this year, this coin remains a fascinating survivor of early twentieth-century American currency.
