In 1901, the Philadelphia Mint struck a run of 111,430 gold double eagles, each carrying a face value of twenty dollars. These impressive pieces were crafted from 90 percent pure gold, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of the precious metal. Because they were minted at the main Philadelphia facility, they do not bear a mint mark, making their clean design a direct reflection of the primary United States minting operations at the turn of the twentieth century. This specific specimen has survived the decades in an extraordinary state of preservation, earning a high certified grade of Mint State 64 (MS-65). The coin features classic American iconography, with the obverse displaying the date 1901. The reverse is adorned with traditional national mottos, including the phrases IN GOD WE TRUST and E PLURIBUS UNUM, alongside the proud inscription of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination TWENTY DOLLARS.
