At the dawn of the twentieth century, the Philadelphia Mint struck tens of millions of one-cent coins, including this remarkable survivor from 1901. This particular specimen is certified in Mint State 64 with a Red Brown designation, indicating that it still retains a significant portion of its original mint luster and copper coloration, blended with the natural, warm toning that develops over more than a century. The obverse features a stylized portrait wearing a Native American feathered headdress, with the word LIBERTY clearly visible on the band. Encircling this central figure is the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the date 1901 positioned at the bottom. The reverse design keeps the focus simple and bold, displaying the denomination ONE CENT surrounded by a traditional wreath. Crafted from an alloy of 95 percent copper alongside a 5 percent mixture of tin and zinc, this coin represents the classic composition of the era, struck without a mint mark in Philadelphia.
