Struck at the Philadelphia Mint at the dawn of the twentieth century, this 1901 silver dollar represents a classic era of American coinage. Because it was minted in Philadelphia, the coin does not bear a mint mark, distinguishing it from those produced at branch mints. This particular specimen survives in About Uncirculated condition, preserving the fine details of its historic design. The obverse side displays the profile of Liberty, who wears a Phrygian cap adorned with a band displaying her name. Surrounding her portrait are thirteen stars, the year 1901, and the traditional Latin motto meaning "Out of many, one." This side contains 0.7734 troy ounces of silver, minted with a purity of 90 percent. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons. The inscriptions on this side include the issuing nation, the face value of one dollar, and the motto expressing trust in God. As part of a series that circulated for roughly 80 years, this coin offers a fascinating look into the everyday currency of the past.
