1901-S Australia Gold Sovereign Veil Head Victoria BU
Struck during a historic transition, this 1901 gold sovereign represents the final year of Queen Victoria's long reign. Minted in Australia at the Sydney branch mint, the coin contains 0.2354 troy ounces of gold, refined to a purity of 0.9167. This particular issue survived the decades in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, preserving the crisp details of its engraving just as it looked when it left the coining press. The obverse displays the mature "Veil Head" portrait of Queen Victoria, facing left. Surrounding her image are abbreviated Latin inscriptions indicating her titles as Queen and Defender of the Faith. The reverse features the legendary depiction of Saint George on horseback, rearing over a fallen dragon, a masterpiece created by the artist Benedetto Pistrucci. A tiny "S" mint mark identifies the Sydney Mint as the origin of this historic gold piece, which had a total mintage of 3,012,000.
