1901-S Morgan Dollar MS-64 PCGS

0.7734 troy oz .900 1901 MS-64 (PCGS)

The 1901 Morgan silver dollar minted in San Francisco represents a fascinating intersection of numismatic artistry and American history. Struck with a purity of 0.900 fine silver and containing 0.7734 troy ounces of precious metal, this dollar is a substantial piece of late nineteenth and early twentieth-century coinage. It measures 38.1 mm in diameter, providing a generous canvas for the intricate details of its classical motifs. On the obverse, the profile of Lady Liberty faces left, her hair crowned with a Phrygian cap that is decorated with a wreath of wheat and cotton. The reverse features an eagle with its wings fully spread, grasping an olive branch and arrows in its talons. This design, created by George T. Morgan, carries the 'S' mint mark below the wreath on the reverse, identifying its origin at the San Francisco Mint. Out of a total mintage of 2,284,000 pieces for this year and location, this specimen has survived in remarkable condition, graded as Mint State 64 (MS-64). The San Francisco Mint itself adds a compelling layer of narrative to this coin. Just five years after this silver dollar was struck, the facility survived the devastating 1906 earthquake and subsequent fires that leveled much of the surrounding city. This certified survivor offers a direct connection to that resilient institution and the era of classic American silver coinage.
