The turn of the twentieth century brought forth some of the most recognizable coinage in American history, including the 1902 Indian Head Cent. This particular specimen is preserved in a notable Mint State 64 condition, displaying the deep, natural brown tones that copper develops over more than a century. Composed of 95 percent copper, with the remaining 5 percent consisting of tin and zinc, this coin represents the classic alloy used for the denomination during this era. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features a depiction of Liberty adorned in a Native American feathered headdress, a creative choice that became an enduring symbol of early twentieth-century pocket change. The word "LIBERTY" is displayed on the band of the headdress, while the year "1902" is anchored at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, the coin features the denomination "ONE CENT" positioned directly in the center. This text is encircled by a detailed oak wreath, which is accented by a small shield at the very top.
