This impressive twenty dollar gold piece, struck in 1902 at the San Francisco Mint, represents a classic era of American coinage. Containing 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900, this specific coin survives in Extra Fine condition. Many pieces of this type were melted down in later decades, making surviving specimens like this one a fascinating window into the past. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty, her hair bound by a band clearly inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Thirteen stars encircle her image, representing the original colonies, with the date 1902 positioned at the bottom. This design was created by James B. Longacre, and the series was produced by the United States Mint from 1850 to 1907. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle displays a shield on its chest, beneath a halo of thirteen stars. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS, accompanied by the S mint mark below the eagle, indicating its origin at the San Francisco facility.
