Struck in the opening years of the twentieth century, this 1903 gold quarter eagle represents a design tradition that spanned more than six decades. Minted at the Philadelphia facility, the coin is composed of 90 percent gold, containing 0.12094 troy ounces of the precious metal. It has survived the decades in remarkable condition, earning a generic certification of Mint State 62 (MS-62). The obverse of the coin showcases a left-facing profile of Liberty, her hair bound by a band clearly inscribed with her name. Thirteen stars encircle this central portrait, representing the original colonies, with the date 1903 positioned at the bottom. This classic depiction was created by designer Christian Gobrecht and served as a staple of American gold coinage from 1840 through 1907. On the reverse, a proud heraldic eagle holds a shield across its chest. The eagle is surrounded by the legend naming the issuing nation, the United States of America, along with the denomination of two and a half dollars, abbreviated as 2 1/2 D. This design remains a testament to the artistry of early United States Mint engraving.
