1903 Gold $1.00 Louisiana Purchase McKinley MS-63 NGC
In 1903, the Philadelphia Mint struck a special gold dollar to commemorate a monumental event in American history: the Louisiana Purchase. This small treasure, minted with a purity of 0.900 gold and containing 0.0483 troy ounces of precious metal, represents a unique era of commemorative coinage. With a total mintage of just 17,500 pieces, these coins are relatively scarce survivors of early twentieth-century American numismatics. The obverse of this gold dollar features a profile portrait of William McKinley, surrounded by the inscription "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA". This specific specimen has survived the decades in remarkable condition, certified by professional grading services as Mint State 63 (MS-63). At this grade, the coin retains much of its original luster and crisp detail, allowing modern observers to appreciate the fine engraving work just as it looked when it left the Philadelphia Mint over a century ago.
