The 1904-O Morgan Dollar represents a significant milestone in American numismatics, marking the final year that the New Orleans Mint struck these iconic silver coins. This facility, which produced money for three separate governments during its operational lifetime, was reopened for silver dollar production following the passage of the Bland-Allison Act. By 1904, the government reserves of silver required for this mandated coinage were nearly exhausted, leading to the permanent cessation of silver dollar production at the New Orleans branch after this run. On the obverse, George T. Morgan's design features a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty. She wears a Phrygian cap decorated with cotton and wheat, encircled by thirteen stars, the year 1904, and the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse depicts a bald eagle with wings spread wide, grasping an olive branch and arrows. Above the eagle is the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST, while the surrounding text reads UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR. The 'O' mint mark, indicating its New Orleans origin, is positioned just above the 'DO' in 'DOLLAR'. Struck from 0.900 fine silver with a total silver weight of 0.7734 troy ounces, this coin has a diameter of 38.1 mm, a thickness of 3.1 mm, and a total weight of 26.73 grams. Out of a mintage of 3,720,000, these coins were once thought to be exceptionally scarce in uncirculated state. This perception changed dramatically in the early 1960s when the United States Treasury released massive quantities of stored bags from its vaults, making beautifully preserved specimens available to the public. This particular piece is certified in Mint State 64 (MS-64), showcasing the design just as it looked when it left the Louisiana press over a century ago.
