The 1904-O Morgan Dollar represents a fascinating chapter in American currency, minted at the historic New Orleans facility. Containing 0.7734 troy ounces of silver, this coin belongs to a classic series that served as United States currency for close to eight decades. While the New Orleans Mint produced 3,720,000 of these silver dollars in 1904, many spent decades hidden away in government vaults. Some were slowly distributed from Washington, D.C. Treasury storage starting in the 1930s, but a massive quantity remained sealed until October 1962, when they were finally released from the Philadelphia Mint vaults. This specimen, graded in Extra Fine condition, showcases the iconic artwork of the series. The obverse displays the profile of Liberty adorned with a Phrygian cap, her hair band inscribed with the word LIBERTY. Surrounding her portrait are thirteen stars, the year 1904, and the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. On the reverse, a bald eagle holds a symbolic olive branch alongside a cluster of arrows. The inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and ONE DOLLAR frame the central design, accompanied by the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Just below the eagle, the letter O denotes its origin at the New Orleans Mint, marking this coin as a survivor of a bygone era of American minting.
