In 1906, the Philadelphia Mint struck a limited run of 176,330 gold Quarter Eagles, each carrying a face value of two and a half dollars. These compact gold pieces represent a bygone era of United States coinage, minted from 90 percent pure gold with a precious metal content of 0.1209 troy ounces. Because they were struck at the main Philadelphia facility, they do not bear a mint mark. This specific specimen has survived more than a century in remarkable condition, certified at a Mint State 62 grade. The obverse of the coin features the classic profile of Liberty, crowned with a coronet bearing her name, surrounded by thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the year 1906 inscribed below. The reverse displays a proud eagle with a shield on its breast, holding an olive branch and arrows, encircled by the legend denoting the United States of America.
