This impressive twenty dollar gold piece, struck in 1906 at the San Francisco Mint, represents the final years of a legendary American design series. Containing 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900, this heavy coin was a workhorse of commerce. The series itself enjoyed a long production run, spanning the years 1850 to 1907. The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Miss Liberty, her hair secured by a pearl-edged tiara that clearly displays the word 'LIBERTY'. Surrounding her portrait are thirteen stars representing the original colonies, with the date 1906 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, James B. Longacre's intricate heraldic eagle dominates the design. The eagle stands with wings fully spread, bearing a shield upon its chest. Above the bird, a halo of rays illuminates an oval arrangement of thirteen stars, accompanied by the motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST'. The outer edge of the design is inscribed with 'UNITED STATES OF AMERICA' and the denomination 'TWENTY DOLLARS'. This specific specimen has been graded as Mint State 62 (MS-62).
