0.4838 troy oz .900 1907 NGC

In 1907, a dramatic transformation swept through United States coinage. This ten-dollar gold piece represents the inaugural year of a legendary design created by the celebrated sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, who was also the artistic force behind the famous twenty-dollar double eagle. His vision initially pushed the boundaries of minting technology, featuring an exceptionally high relief that resembled a commemorative medal rather than circulating currency. To ensure the coins could be stacked easily and to prevent the dies from breaking too quickly, the relief was subsequently lowered for production. The front of the coin showcases a striking portrait of Lady Liberty wearing a traditional Native American war bonnet. Thirteen stars encircle this central figure, with the word LIBERTY inscribed upon her headband and the date 1907 positioned at the bottom. On the reverse, a proud bald eagle stands amidst the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the ten-dollar denomination. Notably, this first-year issue lacks the phrase In God We Trust, which was omitted from the design during 1907 and the early part of 1908. Crafted from 0.900 fine gold, this coin contains 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal. Rather than a standard reeded edge, it features raised stars along its rim, adding another layer of tactile detail to this certified Mint State 62 specimen.
