The 1907 twenty-dollar gold coin represents the final year of a classic American design era that began in 1850. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this substantial piece contains 0.9675 troy ounces of fine gold alloyed with copper for durability. It was part of a robust system of gold coinage produced for daily commerce long before the United States departed from the gold standard in 1933. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty. Her hair is secured by a band inscribed with the word 'Liberty', and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The reverse displays a detailed heraldic eagle holding a shield on its breast. Above the eagle, thirteen stars form a halo beneath the motto 'In God We Trust', surrounded by the inscriptions 'United States of America' and the 'Twenty Dollars' denomination. While the Philadelphia Mint produced 1,451,786 of these coins in 1907, their survival was severely impacted by historical events. Following the monetary policy changes of the 1930s, vast quantities of these gold pieces were melted down, making surviving specimens in Brilliant Uncirculated condition highly compelling examples of early twentieth-century American currency.
