1907 $20 St Gaudens Gold Double Eagle BU
In 1907, the United States Mint introduced a dramatic redesign of the twenty-dollar gold piece, resulting in what many consider one of the most beautiful coins ever struck. This Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, minted in Philadelphia, contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold with a purity of 0.900. It represents the very beginning of a legendary series, preserved in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The obverse of the coin presents a powerful image of Lady Liberty marching forward. She holds a lit torch to light her path and an olive branch representing peace, while the rays of a rising sun illuminate the background. The year 1907 is clearly visible on this side, marking the debut of this iconic design. On the reverse, a magnificent bald eagle is depicted in mid-flight, soaring across a sunlit sky. The inscriptions on this side include the issuing nation, United States of America, and the face value, Twenty Dollars. Notably, this initial 1907 release lacks the motto 'In God We Trust', which was omitted from the original design before being restored to the coinage the following year.
