In 1907, a magnificent era in American numismatics began with the introduction of a new twenty-dollar gold piece. This specific issue represents the final design series for the nation's circulating double eagles, making it a highly significant artifact of early twentieth-century monetary history. The initial version of this design featured high relief, which was subsequently flattened to make the coins more practical for daily commerce. The front of the coin depicts Lady Liberty walking forward with determination, silhouetted against the brilliant rays of a rising sun. In her hands, she carries a torch to light the way and an olive branch representing peace. The reverse side features a majestic bald eagle captured mid-flight, soaring above the sun. This particular issue is notable for what it lacks; some of the coins minted in 1907 and 1908 do not display the motto "In God We Trust." The reverse is inscribed with "United States of America" and the denomination "Twenty Dollars." Minted in 90 percent pure gold, each coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of the precious metal. Out of a total mintage of 361,667 pieces, this specimen has survived in exceptional condition, certified by professional graders as Gem Brilliant Uncirculated MS-65.
