In 1907, a dramatic transformation swept through United States coinage. This twenty-dollar gold piece, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of gold, represents the debut of a design widely celebrated for its artistic ambition. The coin features Lady Liberty stepping forward dynamically against a backdrop of sunbeams, gripping a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. On the opposite side, a majestic bald eagle is depicted soaring through the air. This specific release holds a unique place in monetary history. The initial vision for this coin required a high-relief format, which proved difficult to manufacture and stack efficiently. Consequently, the relief was flattened to facilitate mass production. Out of a mintage of 361,667 pieces, these early issues, including some from 1908, are notable for lacking the phrase "In God We Trust" on their surfaces. The legends on the coin simply read "United States of America" and "Twenty Dollars." As the final circulating twenty-dollar gold denomination issued by the United States, this coin marks the end of an era for circulating gold currency. This particular specimen has survived in exceptional condition, graded as Mint State 65, preserving the intricate details of its historic design.
