1907 $20 St Gaudens Gold High Relief Wire Edge MS-63 PCGS
In 1907, the United States Mint embarked on a bold artistic experiment. The result was a twenty-dollar gold piece featuring an extraordinary high-relief design by sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. To fully capture the immense depth and intricate detail of this artistic vision, each individual blank had to be struck at least three times by the coining presses. This intense process yielded a sharp, sculptural quality, characterized by a distinct wire edge. The obverse of this gold coin presents a powerful image of Liberty walking forward. She holds a lit torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, set against the backdrop of the United States Capitol building. On the reverse, an eagle glides through the air, framed by the rays of a rising sun. While visually magnificent, the extreme physical dimensions of this high-relief coin proved problematic. The sheer thickness and height of the design made it highly impractical for everyday commercial transactions and large-scale manufacturing. Consequently, the Mint was forced to flatten the relief for subsequent issues, making these original multi-struck 1907 editions a fascinating testament to a moment when pure art challenged the practical boundaries of minting.
