1907-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle AU
The 1907-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle represents the final year of a legendary design era that spanned from 1850 to 1907. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, this impressive coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold, with a purity of 0.900. Throughout the twentieth century, vast numbers of these pre-1933 gold issues were melted down, making surviving specimens in Almost Uncirculated condition especially intriguing to study. Designed by James B. Longacre, the obverse of the coin showcases a left-facing portrait of Liberty. Her hair is bound by a band clearly inscribed with the word "Liberty," and she is encircled by thirteen stars representing the original colonies. The year 1907 is anchored at the bottom of the design. On the reverse, a detailed heraldic eagle holds a shield against its chest, with another cluster of thirteen stars positioned above its head. The surrounding inscriptions declare the issuing authority as the "United States of America" and state the face value as "Twenty Dollars." This coin stands as a remarkable monument to nineteenth and early twentieth-century American coinage art.
