In 1908, the Philadelphia mint produced a limited run of just 33,500 ten dollar gold coins. This particular issue stands out for its bold artistic direction, conceived by the renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Struck in 0.900 fine gold, this piece contains 0.4838 troy ounces of precious metal and represents a classic era of American coinage that spanned from 1907 to 1933. The obverse of the coin presents a powerful depiction of Lady Liberty adorned in a traditional Native American war bonnet. Thirteen stars arch over her head, symbolizing the original colonies, while the word LIBERTY is clearly inscribed across her hair band. The year 1908 is positioned directly below her portrait. On the reverse, a proud bald eagle stands as the central focus. It is accompanied by the legends UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the traditional motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the face value spelled out as TEN DOLLARS. Adding to its distinct physical character, the edge of the coin is decorated with raised stars, each representing a state in the union at the time of minting.
