In 1908, the Philadelphia Mint produced a ten-dollar gold piece that represents a fascinating era in American coinage design. Struck from 0.4838 troy ounces of 90 percent pure gold, this particular issue is notable for what it does not include on its reverse, earning it the designation among enthusiasts as a No Motto variety. The obverse of the coin presents a distinctive depiction of Lady Liberty wearing an Native American war bonnet. Thirteen stars encircle this central figure, representing the original colonies, while the word Liberty is clearly inscribed across her hair band. The year 1908 is positioned directly beneath the portrait. On the reverse, a majestic bald eagle stands in profile. The bird is surrounded by the inscriptions United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, and the face value, written as Ten Dollars. Rather than a standard reeded edge, the coin features raised stars along its rim. This specific specimen has been certified in Mint State 61 (MS-61), preserving the sharp details of its original Philadelphia strike, which was limited to a mintage of just 33,500 pieces.
