In 1908, the United States Mint in Philadelphia produced a ten-dollar gold coin that departed dramatically from traditional representations of liberty. The obverse displays a profile of Lady Liberty wearing a Native American feather war bonnet, a striking design choice that is encircled by thirteen stars. Her hair band is inscribed with the word 'Liberty', and the date 1908 is positioned directly below the portrait. The reverse of this gold piece features a proud bald eagle standing amidst the inscriptions 'United States of America', the national motto 'E Pluribus Unum', and the face value of ten dollars.
