In 1908, the United States Mint introduced a radical departure from traditional coinage with the Indian Head quarter eagle. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this gold coin features an incuse design, meaning the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This unusual technique gives the coin a distinctively flat profile and a unique tactile feel, making it one of the most intriguing issues in American numismatic history. The obverse features a realistic portrait of a Native American chief wearing a ceremonial feathered headdress. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies encircle the bust, with the word "LIBERTY" positioned along the top edge and the date 1908 inscribed below. Unlike traditional coins, these elements are pressed directly into the gold, creating a striking visual depth. On the reverse, a proud bald eagle stands atop a bundle of arrows and an olive branch.
