1908 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle MS-65 PCGS
1908 $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle MS-65 PCGS
In 1908, the United States Mint introduced a radical departure from traditional coinage design with the Indian Head quarter eagle. Unlike typical coins with raised features, this gold piece features an incuse design, meaning the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin. This innovative technique gives the coin a distinctively modern, sculptural quality that remains fascinating to look at and touch. On the obverse, a Native American chief wearing a traditional feathered headdress faces left, surrounded by stars with the date 1908 below. The reverse showcases a proud American eagle perched upon a bundle of arrows wrapped in an olive branch. The inscriptions include the national mottos, the country of origin, and the denomination of two and a half dollars. This particular specimen was struck at the Philadelphia Mint, which produced 564,821 of these coins in 1908. It has been certified in Mint State 65 (MS-65) condition, indicating a superb gem quality with minimal marks and an outstanding preservation of its original mint luster. Composed of 90 percent gold, it contains 0.1209 troy ounces of precious metal.
