In 1908, the United States Mint introduced a radical departure from traditional coinage with the Indian Head Quarter Eagle. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, this series is celebrated for its unusual incuse design, where the details are sunken below the flat surface of the coin rather than raised above it. This specific 1908 issue represents the very first year of this innovative design, which was produced from 1908 to 1929. The obverse of this gold piece displays a realistic depiction of Liberty wearing an Native American feather headdress. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies encircle the profile, accompanied by the word LIBERTY and the 1908 date. On the reverse, a proud bald eagle stands amidst the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the face value of two and a half dollars. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this particular coin is an incredibly rare proof specimen. Only 236 of these proof coins were minted, making it an extraordinary survivor of early twentieth-century American numismatic artistry. Each coin contains 0.12094 troy ounces of gold, preserved in an exceptional certified state of preservation.
