In 1908, the Philadelphia Mint produced a striking run of twenty-dollar gold coins that stood out for what they lacked. These pieces, designed by the celebrated sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, were struck without the traditional motto, "In God We Trust." This specific design choice creates a clean, uncluttered canvas for one of the most celebrated artistic achievements in American coinage. With a total mintage of 4,271,551 pieces, these coins were struck in 90 percent pure gold, containing 0.9675 troy ounces of precious metal. Because they bear no mint mark, we know they originated from the historic Philadelphia Minting facility. This particular specimen has survived the decades in an extraordinary state of preservation, certified at the exceptionally high grade of Mint State 67 Plus (MS-67+). At this level of preservation, the intricate details of the design remain incredibly sharp, allowing modern observers to appreciate the artistic vision of the Saint-Gaudens series exactly as it was captured in gold more than a century ago.
